VTV — Villa TV — is a private television channel of the Maldives, launched in 2008. It was the country's second private TV channel and is run under the umbrella of the V Media Group, whose outlets also include the VFM radio station, the Veekly magazine and the VNews news service. The channel was founded by the Maldivian businessman and politician Qasim Ibrahim.
News and public affairs in Dhivehi
VTV's schedule combines Maldivian national news with talk shows, political discussion and entertainment programming in Dhivehi. Through the V Media newsroom it covers the Maldives' political life — the People's Majlis, the government and the atolls — along with the social issues of an island nation spread across the Indian Ocean.
A television pioneer in the islands
The channel has a record of firsts in Maldivian broadcasting: it was the first Maldivian channel to show the FIFA World Cup in HD, and among the country's early adopters of a dedicated mobile app. Its slogan, "Aharenge TV" — "Our TV" — reflects its pitch as a channel belonging to ordinary Maldivians.
VTV's history has also mirrored the country's turbulent politics: the station faced repeated attacks during the Maldives' 2012 political upheaval, a period that underlined how central private broadcasters had become to the islands' public life.
