Al-Manar is a Lebanese satellite television station broadcasting from Beirut, where it began terrestrial transmissions on 4 June 1991 and added a satellite service in 2000. Its name means the lighthouse, and the channel is a member of the Arab States Broadcasting Union.

The station is owned and operated by Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia political party and armed movement, and its editorial line follows that affiliation. Analysts have described it as central to the organisation's media work, and the channel reaches an audience estimated at around fifty million people.

News and Current Affairs

News bulletins form the core of the schedule and have done since the early 1990s, when regular bulletins were introduced ahead of the 1992 parliamentary election. Bulletins are broadcast in Arabic and cover Lebanese politics, the region and international affairs, with correspondents reporting from southern Lebanon and from bureaux abroad.

Talk programmes and political analysis follow the bulletins, and the channel carries extensive coverage of events in Lebanon's border areas.

Documentaries and Cultural Output

Beyond the news, Al-Manar produces documentaries on Lebanese society, history and the country's religious communities, alongside cultural and religious programming. Some of this material is sold or licensed, and the station's own productions form part of its income.

Reception and Restrictions

Al-Manar is banned in the United States, France, Spain and Germany, and has encountered licensing and service problems that have made it unavailable in the Netherlands, Canada and Australia. Its budget was estimated by the RAND Corporation in 2017 at roughly fifteen million dollars a year, drawn largely from expatriate donors, Iranian community organisations and the sale of programmes.

Online

The channel publishes a live stream and its news output through its own websites in Arabic and English, and distributes reports through social platforms.
