Sky News is Britain's original 24-hour news channel, on air since 5 February 1989 and broadcasting today from Sky Central at Osterley in West London. Owned by Sky Group, a division of Comcast, it remains free-to-air on Freeview channel 233 and is the screen much of the country turns to when the big story breaks.
Rolling News, British Style
The schedule is rolling news at its most practised: hourly bulletins and open-ended live coverage through day and night, The Kay Burley Show setting the political day at breakfast, and correspondents reporting live from Westminster, across the UK and around the world. Westminster politics gets its own platform in All Out Politics, while Trevor Phillips on Sunday anchors the weekend schedule.
Thirty-Seven Years of Firsts
Sky News launched years before the BBC had a news channel of its own, and it has been setting the pace ever since - from election nights and royal events to wars and attacks at home and abroad. Its coverage of the September 11 attacks and the Soham murders won BAFTA awards, its reporting on the 7 July 2005 London bombings took an International Emmy, and in 2024 the channel was named Royal Television Society News Channel of the Year for the seventeenth time.
Around the UK and the World
Beyond the main channel, Sky News Radio supplies bulletins to stations across the UK, and the organisation feeds a network of bureaux from Westminster and Edinburgh to Washington, Beijing and Jerusalem. The channel has streamed live on YouTube since 2014, and international viewers receive a version without British advertisements across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond.
