Cape Town TV Live Stream

Cape Town TV - CTV - is the non-profit community television channel of Cape Town, South Africa, launched on 1 September 2008 by a collective of community media organisations and still run on a not-for-profit basis with NGOs as its members.

Its schedule is built on programmes acquired free of charge from independent producers, community members, production houses, educational institutions and government agencies, alongside studio shows produced with the channel's partners.

A Station Housed in a Film School

CTV operates from the campus of AFDA, the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, in Observatory - a partnership that gives the channel studio facilities and student crews, and gives film students on-air training and a broadcast outlet for their work. Similar relationships connect the station to the University of the Western Cape, the University of Cape Town, City Varsity and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Programming

The output is weighted towards documentary and community programming: health, human rights, spirituality, the environment and world affairs. The channel's own studio talk shows have included the current-affairs programme Currents and the public-access format Open Studio, where members of the public host their own shows. Programme partners contribute series such as the HIV/AIDS awareness show Siyayinqoba: Beat It! and The Labour Show, while local productions have ranged from What's On in Cape Town and Street Talk to Talent in Action. The current line-up includes Cape Town Daily, Cape Rugby, City Living, Home Grown, Masimbonge and Proe.

From Tygerberg to Digital

CTV began as a low-power free-to-air service transmitting from Tygerberg hill, and broadcast around the clock with a schedule that mixes first runs and repeats. With South Africa's digital migration the channel extended its reach - it is now carried nationally on the FreeVision satellite service and through the Freevision Play streaming app, and in 2021 the station launched its own video-on-demand platform with six content channels.
