ABP News began life in February 1998 as Star News, a venture between Star India and New Delhi Television that produced its content in both English and Hindi. Today it is the Hindi-language flagship of the ABP Network, a free-to-air national news channel broadcasting from Noida.

From a Star–NDTV venture to an Indian-owned network

The channel turned Hindi-only in 2003, the year its production deal expired and India capped foreign equity in national news broadcasting at 26 per cent. That rule pushed Star India into MCCS, a joint venture with the Anandabazar Patrika group in which ABP held 74 per cent. On 16 April 2012 the partners ended the Star brand licensing agreement, Star sold its minority stake, and the channel was renamed ABP News — the same change that turned Star Ananda and Star Majha into ABP Ananda and ABP Majha.

What the channel carries

National politics: rolling coverage of the Union government, Parliament and the parties, with the channel's correspondents reporting from Delhi and the states.

Elections: extensive reporting through state assembly and Lok Sabha campaigns, including debate programmes and constituency-level coverage that the network treats as its flagship season.

Crime and consumer affairs: investigation-led strands on fraud, civic failures and everyday grievances, alongside court and policing news.

Sport: cricket-led coverage during international and domestic seasons, with match analysis and the business of Indian sport.

Network scale and the HD relaunch

ABP News sits alongside ABP Ananda (Bengali), ABP Majha (Marathi), ABP Sanjha (Punjabi, launched 2014) and ABP Asmita (Gujarati, launched 1 January 2016) in a group renamed ABP Network in July 2020. That December the channels were rebranded together — new on-screen bugs, a new identity and lower-thirds designed by Saffron Brand Consultants — as ABP News moved to record at 1080i and tested its high-definition feed. In 2022 it took the title of Best Hindi-language News Channel at the 21st Indian Television Academy Awards.
