DVB TV (Democratic Voice of Burma) is the television service of a non-profit Burmese media organization dedicated to independent journalism. The organization operates under the DVB Foundation, registered in Oslo, Norway, since 1992, and has been a key source of reliable news for the people of Myanmar, especially in challenging times.
From Oslo to Myanmar's Screens
DVB's story began in July 1992, when Burmese expatriates in Oslo started broadcasting into Burma via shortwave radio from the Kvitsøy Tower transmitter in Norway. The satellite television broadcasts followed on 28 May 2005 - what the organization described as the first free and independent Burmese-language television channel - and from 2012 DVB operated openly inside Myanmar, running a branch office with its former underground video journalists. On 24 March 2018 the channel began free-to-air digital broadcasting in the country through the MRTV DVB-T2 multiplex.
Banned, Not Silenced
After the February 2021 coup, the military junta banned DVB in March 2021 alongside four other independent networks, and its reporters faced arrests. The organization moved back underground - the same pattern as its early years, when its journalism had already produced work known far beyond Myanmar: the Al Jazeera exposé on the Burmese military's nuclear ambitions, the PBS documentary Eyes of the Storm on Cyclone Nargis shot largely by DVB filmmakers, and the Oscar-nominated Burma VJ, which recounts the experiences of DVB's reporters.
News for Myanmar
The channel's grid is built on news: bulletins covering Myanmar's politics, society and the regions, alongside current-affairs programmes and reports from the DVB newsroom, distributed by satellite, digital terrestrial and online.
