Sat.1 is a German free-to-air television station and is part of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media Group. The station is considered the first privately operated television network in Germany, and was launched in January 1984 under the name PKS (Programmgesellschaft für Kabel- und Satellitenrundfunk). Initiated as a joint venture between various publishing houses, the station was renamed Sat.1 in January 1985.

When it first went on the air, Sat.1 could be received by only about 1,200 households with cable access in the city of Ludwigshafen. Despite this limited reach, Sat.1 quickly succeeded in attracting a broad audience, and established itself as one of the most important TV stations in Germany.
