SAT.1 is a German commercial television channel with news, factual entertainment, drama and studio competitions. It began broadcasting on 1 January 1984 as PKS, Germany’s first private broadcaster, and adopted the SAT.1 name in January 1985.

From PKS to SAT.1

ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE records the 1984 launch as a milestone in German broadcasting history. The channel’s schedule has since developed across several genres, from daily news and magazine programmes to scripted series and competition formats.

Daily news and magazine television

SAT.1-Frühstücksfernsehen (SAT.1 Breakfast Television) is a morning magazine combining interviews, service topics and entertainment. SAT.1 :newstime supplies a regular news bulletin, giving the schedule a daily current-affairs component alongside entertainment programming.

Factual formats and rescue work

Auf Streife (On Patrol) presents police-themed cases as dramatized stories; SAT.1 states that the incidents shown are fictional. NOTRUF (Emergency Call) focuses on emergencies and the work of rescue personnel. The two programmes use different formats to portray police and emergency-response situations.

Serial drama and cooking competition

Die Spreewaldklinik (The Spreewald Clinic) is a medical serial drama centred on doctor Lea Wolff, who returns to the Spreewald and works at a local clinic while searching for the daughter she gave up for adoption. In The Taste (The Taste), professional and amateur cooks compete by presenting dishes on small spoons. SAT.1’s programme information traces the cooking competition to 2013.
