Al Manar Live Stream

Al Manar (المنار, 'The Lighthouse') is a Lebanese satellite station broadcasting in Arabic from Beirut. It began terrestrial transmission on 4 June 1991 and moved to satellite in 2000, around the clock since December of that year. Owned and operated by Hezbollah, it uses the slogan 'The channel for Arabs and Muslims'.

News and Talk

The news day is built on Arabic bulletins repeated through the day, with editions in English and French. The best known talk show is Beit al-ankabut (The Spider's House), joined by Hadith al-sa'a (Talk of the Hour), Ma'al Hadath (With the Event) and Al-din wa al-hayat (Religion and Life), with guests from journalism, politics and Islamic scholarship.

Drama, Sport and Children

Sport is covered by Goal and Tis'in daqiqa (Ninety Minutes), family programming by Ayday al-khayr (Hands of Benevolence) and the game show Al-muhima (The Mission). For children there is Al-Manar al-saghir (The Little Manar), aimed at three- to seven-year-olds. Iranian films and Syrian serials fill the drama slots, with self-produced Ramadan series such as Izz al-Din al-Qassam (2001).

From Haret Hreik to Satellite

The station started in Haret Hreik, in the southern suburbs of Beirut, with five hours of transmission a day, and received its Lebanese broadcasting licence in July 1997. The satellite channel was requested in March 2000 by Muhammad Ra'd, a member of parliament and the station's largest shareholder, and launched to coincide with the Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon in May 2000, with around-the-clock output via ArabSat by December. Its signal has been carried on Arabsat, Badr and Nilesat beams, with a potential audience of some 50 million people.

Carriage Abroad

Outside Lebanon the channel has faced restrictions: dropped from the Australian TARBS package in 2003, ordered off the Eutelsat Hot Bird platform by France's Conseil d'Etat in December 2004 after the series Ash-Shatat, designated in the United States the same month, and banned in Spain and Germany.
