JBS, the Jewish Broadcasting Service, is an American English-language television network produced by the non-profit organization Jewish Education in Media (JEM). The channel combines daily news from Israel, live event coverage and analysis with cultural, educational and religious programming aimed at Jewish audiences in North America and worldwide.

From Shalom TV to a Worldwide Network

The service was developed by Rabbi Mark S. Golub beginning in 2003 and began broadcasting on August 31, 2006, under the name Shalom TV. On September 24, 2014, the network was renamed JBS with the stated aim of becoming a worldwide Jewish network. It is produced by Jewish Education in Media, a non-profit corporation whose goal is to reach less-affiliated Jews and draw them closer to Jewish religion and identity; the organization is led by CEO Rabbi Justin Pines. JBS operates as a full-time channel in both high and standard definition.

News, Study and Community Life

News is a pillar of the schedule, with daily reports from JBS Daily News and the Israeli service ILTV, alongside news breaks and programs that take viewer call-ins. The network televises live Friday and Saturday Shabbat services and holiday services, covers public-affairs events, and hosts roundtable discussions of issues facing the world Jewish community. Educational strands include Jewish Studies programs that teach Hebrew and comment on the basic tenets of Judaism, interviews with prominent Jews, Israel travel documentaries, cuisine segments and features on Jewish authors. Film criticism appears in Jewish Cinematheque, and talk formats such as Thinking Out Loud add discussion of culture and current affairs.

Films and Cultural Programming

JBS presents a rotating selection of American, Israeli and Yiddish films, together with Israeli and American Jewish cultural shows and children's programs. Presentations from 92NY, the New York institution for Jewish arts and ideas, also appear in the lineup, reflecting the network's emphasis on the diversity and pluralism of the worldwide Jewish population.

JBS is carried on cable, satellite and on-demand platforms reaching tens of millions of homes across North America, and its broadcast area extends worldwide.
