TRT Kurdî is the Kurdish-language channel of Turkey's public broadcaster TRT, broadcasting in the Kurmanji dialect and in Zazaki. It was launched as TRT 6 in 2009 and took the name TRT Kurdî on its sixth anniversary. It was the first national TRT station broadcasting in Kurdish.

Breaking the Language Ban

The ban on the Kurdish language in Turkey was lifted in 2001, and legal barriers to broadcasting in Kurdish were removed the following year; from 2004 TRT was allowed 30 minutes of Kurdish programming. TRT 6 launched in 2009 as a full Kurdish channel - a step opposed at the time by both the MHP and the CHP, and boycotted by pro-Kurdish parties who saw it as a state answer to the diaspora channel Roj TV. A 2018 survey found that 59 percent of Kurdish viewers did not trust the channel's news reporting, a reception that has accompanied the station throughout its history.

Programming in Kurmanji and Zazaki

The grid combines the Nûçe news bulletins and the Zazaki service Ajansa Zazaki with the morning show Rojbaş Türkiye and the weekend review Dawiya Heftê. The channel cultivates the dengbêj singing tradition in Dengbêj and Stranbêj, and carries drama series such as Çiyayê Dil, Avahiya Bêgunehan and Rêwitiya Evînê, documentaries including Şopên Dîrokî and War û Dîrok, and children's cartoons like Rafadan Tayfa and Îbî.
