The channel traces its history to December 15, 1963, when the first televised broadcast marked the evacuation of Bizerte, made with the technical support of Italian television. Mohamed Mzali, appointed head of Radiodiffusion-Télévision Tunisienne in 1964, led the launch of the national channel.

Today El Watania 1 broadcasts nationwide alongside its sister channel El Watania 2, and streams online through its official site.
