Iqraa Arabic is the flagship service of Iqraa, the Arabic satellite channel founded by Sheikh Saleh Abdullah Kamel and launched in 1998. Its slogan - lil-nas kaffa, "for all people" - sets the ambition of a channel meant to address a general audience rather than a single school of thought.

What the channel broadcasts

The programme list moves between biography, place and text. A series on the Prophet follows his life and character; another traces the history and names of Mecca before and after Islam, along with the landmarks written into its mountains; a third journeys through the architecture and symbolism of mosques across cultures. Scripture is handled in reflective formats that pause on verses and draw out their meanings, and a long-running programme with Dr. Ayman Rushdi Suwaid corrects the recitations of viewers who call in.

Medicine, mercy and the wider world

Iqraa also carries subjects that sit at the edge of religious broadcasting: a series on Prophetic medicine brings physicians and researchers to discuss studies drawn from the Prophet's guidance, and programmes on God's mercy and on the contributions of Muslim civilisation address the moral and cultural questions of the audience.

The founder's brief

Sheikh Saleh Kamel, who died in 2020, set the channel's goals himself in 1998: to consolidate the moderate method of Islam, to show the bright sides of Arab and Islamic civilisation, to strengthen the Arabic language, to present Islam's tolerance and rebut accusations against it, to foster dialogue, to attend to the role of women and to follow the condition of Muslim communities worldwide. Iqraa Arabic remains the platform on which that brief is carried out.
