betevé Live Stream
betevé is the municipal television channel of Barcelona - the Catalan-language public local broadcaster that serves the Barcelonès on behalf of the city council, carrying local news, city coverage and public-service programming. On air since 1994 as Barcelona Televisió and rebranded betevé in 2017, it is the screen of Barcelona's own civic life, and its signal also streams live online.
Few local channels anywhere have experimented as much: from district channels to a unified city service, from five-minute blocks to long-form prime time, Barcelona's station has reinvented itself repeatedly while keeping its Catalan voice and its proximity mission.
The Channel of the Barcelonès
The programming centers on the city: newscasts under the BTV Noticies tradition, Infobarris bulletins for every district, magazines on urban affairs, culture and sport, and the civic participation formats the channel pioneered. The schedule has evolved through distinct eras - the short-format public service of the late nineties, the long-form era that brought Ferran Monegal's El Telemonegal, Einstein a la platja and Ciutat Oberta, and the modern news-and-proximity grid of betevé - with the audience at one point growing ninety percent in two years. The iconic Videomatón of the early years - photo booths around the city where Barcelonians recorded one-minute messages for one hundred pesetas, broadcast in blocks - remains one of Spanish television's most-cited participation experiments.
From District Channels to betevé
Barcelona's local television grew district by district through the 1980s, and on 3 November 1994 the city unified the ten district channels into Barcelona Televisió, broadcasting in Catalan from studios on Via Laietana. The channel became a technical pioneer: the first local broadcaster in Catalonia with teletext, and the first local station in all of Spain to broadcast on digital terrestrial television - with interactive MHP services - when it moved to the 22@ district of Poblenou in 2005. In 2008 the directorship opened to public competition, and in 2014 the channel absorbed the municipal radio Barcelona FM. Under director Sergi Vicente the station refashioned itself as a transmedia service, and on 31 January 2017 it took its present name, betevé, with a new identity and a grid centered on news, public service and proximity.
Public Service, Streaming
Today the channel operates as the city's own audiovisual service: the live signal on its player, the on-demand archive, the radio and the district bulletins, and an active social presence across platforms. For Barcelona - and for a Catalan-speaking audience that follows the city's politics, culture and daily life from anywhere - betevé remains what the city council built it to be: the municipal screen, close to its viewers and on the air around the clock.
