L1 is the regional public broadcaster of the Dutch province of Limburg, based in Maastricht. Broadcasting in Dutch and Limburgish, it operates the L1 TV television channel alongside L1 Radio and the internet services L11 Alaaf Radio and Plat-eweg Radio.

History

The broadcaster was founded in 1988 as Omroep Limburg, replacing the Regionale Omroep Zuid, and rebranded as L1 in 1999 following a merger with the commercial broadcaster TV8 Limburg. It continues the tradition of Limburg regional broadcasting that dates back to 1945.

Television Programming

L1 TV's schedule centres on regional news: L1 Nieuws delivers bulletins throughout the day. Current affairs include the talk show AvondGasten, the human-interest format Óngerwaeg (broadcast partly in Limburgish), the culture programme Nachsjiech and the documentary strand Limburg Doc. Sport is covered by Pitlane and Tafel Voetbal.

Distribution

The channel reaches the province through the regional cable networks and its own live service at l1.nl, with programmes archived on its YouTube channel. L1 Radio and its sister services complete the broadcaster's offer.
