Sharjah TV (قناة الشارقة) is the television channel of the emirate of Sharjah, owned by the Sharjah Media Corporation. On the air terrestrially since 1989 and via satellite since 1996, it positions itself as a cultural channel, concentrating on religious and cultural programming for the emirate and the wider Arab world.
From a 1989 Transmitter to a Media Corporation
Sharjah Television Station was established on 18 November 1985 and began transmission on 11 February 1989, when it was opened by Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi. A year later the young station won its first award at the Cairo Radio and TV Festival. Satellite broadcasts started in 1996, and in 1997 the channel was repositioned as an Arab Cultural Channel. July 2007 brought a second service, Sharjah TV 2, aimed at sports, youth and social programming, later followed by a dedicated Sharjah Sports Channel. The current media corporation was formed in 2009 by an Emiri decree, absorbing the radio station and training facilities. For its 25th anniversary the channel changed its logo from gold to silver, and in February 2019 it unveiled another new identity to mark 30 years on air.
Religious and Cultural Programming
Sharjah TV produces religious and cultural programs in several languages to reach the country's different communities, including productions in Persian and Urdu alongside its Arabic schedule. One of its best-known formats is Direct Line, created in 2006 and simulcast with Sharjah Radio. In October 2023 the corporation signed an agreement with Radiotelevisión Española for exclusive Arab World rights to Abu Abdillah, the Prince of Granada, a historical miniseries about the last Nasrid ruler.
