13WMAZ - WMAZ-TV - is Macon, Georgia's CBS affiliate: the fourth-oldest television station in the state and the oldest outside Atlanta, on the air since 27 September 1953. Owned by the Tegna subsidiary of Nexstar and broadcasting from studios on Gray Highway on Macon's northeast side, channel 13 has been Middle Georgia's station for more than seventy years, and its newscasts also stream live online.
Few stations anywhere can match the technical pedigree: WMAZ was built as one of the most powerful VHF stations in the country, and it remains Macon's only VHF outlet - a signal built to cover a region, not just a city.
Middle Georgia's Station
13WMAZ covers Middle Georgia - Macon and Bibb County, Warner Robins and Robins Air Force Base, the small towns between Atlanta's orbit and the coastal plain - with newscasts from morning to late night and a weather operation tuned to the corridor's storms. The market's geography gives the station a reach far beyond its rank: the transmitter's secondary signal historically stretched from the southern Atlanta suburbs to the western edge of Savannah, and the station's audience has always reflected that spread. The CW Plus rides on the digital subchannel for a second network's worth of programming.
The Macon Institution
WMAZ-TV signed on 27 September 1953 as the second television station in Macon - the first, a UHF outfit on channel 47, folded within two years, leaving channel 13 as the market's only commercial station from 1955 until 1968. The call letters came from WMAZ radio, the Macon broadcaster that grew out of a physics project at Mercer University, and the television station's CBS affiliation mirrored the radio station's long relationship with the CBS network. Early secondary affiliations - NBC, ABC, DuMont - faded away one by one, though ABC programs lingered into the 1980s, including General Hospital in the afternoons and Saturday NCAA football in the fall. Ownership passed from Southeastern Broadcasting through Southern Broadcasting to Multimedia, Inc. in 1967, and after the Gannett years the station arrived at Tegna - which put it under Nexstar's umbrella in the 2026 merger. The Gray Highway studios have been home since 1974.
The Signal from the Twiggs Line
The transmitter on the Golden Isles Highway at the Twiggs-Bibb county line is the physical anchor of the station's reach - a facility whose signal strength made Middle Georgia one of the better-served small markets in the South from the very beginning. The live stream now carries the same signal to screens far beyond the county line: the fourth-oldest station in Georgia, still the first one Middle Georgia turns to.
