Kern County TV - KGOV-TV - is the government access channel of Kern County, California: the public-service station that has put county government on the air since May 1997 and covers what its operators describe as the largest government access territory in the nation - a county of more than eight thousand square miles running from the southern Sierra Nevada into the Mojave. Board meetings, county programs and public information fill the schedule, and the channel also streams live online.
Run by the county's communications operation as what its mission statement calls a transparency-driven information source for the public, KGOV is Bakersfield's civic screen - the place where Kern County's nearly nine hundred thousand residents watch their government at work.
The Board on the Air
The centerpiece is live coverage of the Board of Supervisors, the five-member body that governs California's sprawling oil-and-agriculture county: meetings air on the channel and stream live on the county's video platforms, with agendas from zoning and budgets to public health and wildfire preparedness. Around the meetings runs a schedule of county-produced programs - the departments and services that keep a county this size operating, from public works and parks to the sheriff and public health - along with emergency information when the San Joaquin Valley's fire season or the region's earthquakes demand it.
Since 1997
KGOV-TV went on the air in May 1997 as a public service of county government, built for the cable era and carried forward into the streaming one: the live channel runs on the county's video platform today, while the county's own channels archive board sessions and programs on demand. The audience is a county of extremes - mountain communities, desert towns, and the Bakersfield metropolitan core - and the channel's job has stayed the same for nearly three decades: whatever the Board decides, whatever the departments do, KGOV puts it on the air.
Big County, Wide Signal
Kern is a county that takes four hours to drive across - from the Tehachapi passes to the Owens Valley edge, from the oil fields along the Kern River to the borax country of the desert. For a geography that size, a government channel is less a luxury than a utility: the live stream and the archive put the county's business within reach of every resident, from a Wasco farm town to a Mojave desert ranch, one Board meeting at a time.
