NTV Plus Live Stream

NTV Plus is the streaming arm of NTV - Newfoundland Television: the province's first and only privately owned television station, on the air from St. John's since 6 September 1955. An independent station owned by the Newfoundland Broadcasting Company, NTV has been the island's own broadcaster through seven decades of change, and its signal also streams live online.

NTV is the kind of station Canada reads about: one of the first in the country to broadcast around the clock, a prime-time block that historically ran four and a half hours instead of the North American three, and a schedule set to Newfoundland's own time zone - the one that puts the province half an hour ahead of everyone else.

The Island's Own Broadcaster

NTV News covers the whole province - the island's bays and towns and the Labrador coast - with provincial newscasts that treat Newfoundland and Labrador as the complete story rather than a regional afterthought. Around the news runs the programming mix of an independent: local shows, entertainment and community coverage alongside imported series cherry-picked from whatever the bigger networks offered - a programming strategy the station honed over decades of picking for itself.

From CBC to CTV to Independent

Geoff Stirling and Don Jamieson's Newfoundland Broadcasting Company put the province's first television station on the air in 1955 as a CBC affiliate, moving to CTV when the CBC opened its own St. John's station in 1964. For a stretch in the mid-1970s the station branded itself "NBC" - for Newfoundland Broadcasting Company - until American NBC programming arrived on island cable and the calls became NTV in 1978. When Stirling and Jamieson unwound their partnership, Stirling kept NTV and the FM station OZFM; the television station moved to its Logy Bay Road studios in 1983, and after decades as a CTV affiliate with an independent streak, NTV went fully independent in 2002.

Around the Clock Since 1972

In 1972, CJON became one of the first stations in Canada - if not the first - to broadcast around the clock every night, an overnight habit that suited a station serving fishermen, shift workers and remote communities across the island. NTV Plus extends that reach to the streaming world: Newfoundlanders scattered across the mainland and beyond can keep the province's own station in view, from NTV News to the community notices and weather that still anchor daily life on the Rock - the same signal St. John's has watched since 1955, carried to wherever the Newfoundland diaspora lives now.
