Kurdistan's established channel

Sulaymaniyah and the Patriotic Union

Sulaymaniyah is the centre of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's political sphere, as Erbil is of the Kurdistan Democratic Party's. Kurdish media are generally aligned with one of the two, and a channel working from Sulaymaniyah speaks to that half of the region's politics.

Kurdish broadcasting

The region has run its own television market since the 1990s, with dozens of channels funded by parties, families and business groups. Advertising is thin, which is why political patronage shapes Kurdish broadcasting more visibly than in most of the region.
