Ōlelo Community Media - NATV 53 Live Stream

Ōlelo NATV 53 is the community access channel of Ōlelo Community Media - O'ahu's non-profit Public, Education and Government access provider, serving Honolulu and the island since 1989. The name ōlelo is Hawaiian for "to speak," and NATV 53 is where the island speaks: community-produced programs, neighborhood voices and civic coverage, with the channel streaming live online.

Ōlelo was created after Congress mandated public access programming on cable systems, and it has spent more than three decades turning that mandate into equipment, training and airtime for ordinary island residents. Its programming runs across a family of cable channels - FOCUS 49, NATV 53, VIEWS 54 and OAHU 55 - each carrying its own live stream.

Community Television, Island-Style

The NATV 53 schedule is O'ahu talking to itself: programs produced by residents on everything from local music and hula to gardening, faith and local politics; coverage of neighborhood board meetings, the hyperlocal civic layer where Honolulu's communities take positions on everything from zoning to parks; and Hawaiian cultural programming - language, history and practice - alongside the community events that keep the island connected. Anyone on O'ahu can take Ōlelo's production training and put a program on the schedule, which is the point: public access exists so that citizens who don't own a television station still get a voice in the islands' media.

Thirty-Plus Years of Island Voices

Launched in 1989 as O'ahu's PEG access provider, Ōlelo built exactly the model Congress intended: a non-profit funded through the cable franchise that converts public, education and government obligations into studios, cameras, edit suites and channels. "Mahalo for 30 years of your voices" was the message when the organization marked its thirtieth anniversary in 2019, and its mission - to strengthen island voices and advance community engagement through innovative media - has carried it from the cable era into the streaming one, with live channels and on-demand archives carrying neighborhood board meetings and community programs to viewers far beyond the island.

Four Channels, One Mission

NATV 53 anchors the community side of a four-channel family: FOCUS 49, VIEWS 54 and OAHU 55 complete the lineup on O'ahu's cable systems, each with its own live stream through Ōlelo's video platform and its own archive of public meetings and programs. The Honolulu facilities handle training and production for the whole operation, and the Ōlelo archive keeps island history - from governors' ceremonies to community festivals - available on demand, a record of more than three decades of O'ahu telling its own story in its own voice.
