TV channels Yemen
Yemeni television mirrors the country's hard decade. Its channels speak from Sana'a and from exile, from studios in Istanbul and Cairo as well as from inside Yemen - and nearly all of them are, at heart, news operations, because in Yemen the news is never just news.
Independent Journalism from Exile
Belqees TV is the country's independent news channel, named for Belqees - the Queen of Sheba, who ruled from Yemen. Driven from Sana'a, it broadcasts from Istanbul: rolling coverage of the war and the humanitarian crisis, political talk shows, human-rights reporting and cultural programmes for Yemenis at home and across the diaspora. Yemen Today TV is another Yemeni satellite news channel working from exile, headquartered in Cairo.
The Sana'a Airwaves
Almasirah TV is the flagship of the Al Masirah Media Network, owned by Ansar Allah - the movement that holds Sana'a - and carries its view of the war and the world. Almasirah Mubasher is its live companion, carrying events and addresses in full, without editing. Suhail Channel is a national satellite service devoted to Yemeni affairs.
Born of the 2011 Uprising
Yemen Shabab Channel - "Yemen Youth" - was established in December 2011, in the wake of the street protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh. A channel built by and for a young generation, it carries news, cultural and educational programming in the voice of the uprising's cohort.
Taken together, these stations form a fractured but vivid map of the country: rival airwaves, exile newsrooms, and a generation that built its own channel.
