TV channels Australia
Australian television reaches the viewer in very different ways: through the public broadcaster's channels, through shopping networks that have sold products on screen for decades, and through small regional and digital projects that grew up outside the big cities. Together they sketch how a vast, urban-concentrated country watches TV.
The ABC Pair: News and Children's TV
Two of the channels belong to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. ABC News is the corporation's round-the-clock news service, with live blocks through the day, flagship programs such as 7.30 and Insiders and reporting from the ABC's correspondents in Australia and abroad. ABC Kids serves children under six with entertainment and early-learning programming from 4am to 7:30pm, sharing its slot with the evening ABC Family service.
Shopping Television, Australian Style
Few countries took to TV shopping like Australia. TVSN - the Television Shopping Network - has been on air since 1995, presenting live product demonstrations every day across fashion, health, kitchen, electronics and jewellery from its Sydney base. Its sister channel Expo channel, launched in 2002, built its schedule on the infomercial format, selling airtime to advertisers rather than stocking its own goods.
Mountains, Faith and a Digital Newsroom
Snowy Mountains TV is regional television in the classic sense: broadcasting from Jindabyne in the New South Wales high country, it covers the Snowy Monaro with winter snow reports from the Thredbo and Perisher ski resorts, local news and community events for the Australian Alps. Ticker TV comes from the opposite end of the trade - a digital-first news network built for online viewing. And GOD TV, the international Christian broadcaster, adds worship services and faith programming to the Australian screen.
