Canal 5 is the oldest television channel in Honduras, part of the Televicentro network of the country's leading media group. Its schedule combines Honduran news, novelas and football with general entertainment.

Honduras' First Channel

Television arrived in Honduras on 15 September 1959, when HRTG-TV went on air on VHF channel 5 from Tegucigalpa - the country's first television service. The opening broadcast carried the independence-day parade from the Estadio Nacional to twenty-five receivers installed in shop windows across the capital, and the channel's early years mixed American series with the newscast Telerápidas, founded by journalist Vicente Machado Valle. In 1961 it added outside-broadcast units for live football, baseball and basketball, and in 1963 the station passed to the Ferrari-Villeda family, which owns it to this day.

The Televicentro Era

Since 1987 Canal 5 has operated within Corporación Televicentro, the multimedia group that unified the country's leading channels - Telesistema Hondureño and Telecadena - and built repeaters to carry them nationwide. The corporation also owns radio networks and Club Deportivo Olimpia, and holds the broadcast rights to the FIFA World Cup, the Honduran national team and the Liga Nacional - matches that anchor Canal 5's sports schedule alongside its novelas, game shows and weekend films.
