CNN Philippines online - Television live
CNN Philippines Live Stream
CNN Philippines was the Philippine franchise of the CNN brand, launched on 16 March 2015 by Nine Media Corporation - and it signed off for good on 31 January 2024, after mounting losses ended the licensing deal. Its frequency and much of its spirit passed to RPTV the next morning.
Nine Years of Newsroom Craft
In its run, CNN Philippines set a benchmark for English-language news in the country: The Source with Pinky Webb for the morning interview, the Newsroom bulletins through the day, The Final Word with Rico Hizon to close the night, and Sports Desk for the games Filipinos argue about. Its coverage of elections, typhoons and the pandemic earned awards and a loyal - if never mass - audience.
Why It Ended
The economics of cable news in a free-TV country finally caught up: Nine Media cited years of financial losses, paid out its newsroom, and returned the CNN name to Atlanta. The channel's last broadcast ended with a montage and a simple thank-you.
Watching Today
The signal and website are gone, but the channel's journalism survives in the memories of its viewers and the careers of its reporters - many of whom carried the CNN Philippines standard straight into RPTV and other newsrooms. For anyone tracing the history of Philippine broadcast news, the channel's nine years remain a benchmark of what English-language television journalism could be in Manila.
