Canal 53 UANL Live Stream
Canal 53 - Canal UANL - is the public television station of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, broadcasting cultural, musical, children's and educational programming from the university's Campus Mederos in Monterrey. On channel 53.1 in the Monterrey metropolitan area and streaming online, it is the screen of the north's great public university, and its signal also streams live online.
Few university channels have a founding story as particular as this one: a channel born as a practical laboratory for electronics students, which grew into a public broadcaster with its own full schedule.
The University's Channel
The programming is cultural and educational by charter: the channel carries the university's own productions - the concerts of the OSUANL, the university's symphony orchestra, which appear on the schedule as dedicated broadcast series - alongside the cultural magazine ¡A lo Mexa!, which takes viewers through the country's states, and a daytime grid built on musical, children's and educational programming. The channel covers the university's public life - the lectures, the cultural calendar, the sports - and serves as the audiovisual workshop where UANL students learn production, editing and on-air work.
The Engineering Lab That Became a Channel
XHMNU-TV Canal 53 was inaugurated on 15 June 1990 under the university's Facultad de Ingeniería Mecánica y Eléctrica, born from the need for a theoretical and practical laboratory for electronics and communications students - the first university channel in Nuevo León, built at the initiative of Ing. Guadalupe Cedillo and Ing. José Antonio González Treviño with the support of rector Ing. Gregorio Farías Longoria. The first transmission, on 9 June 1990, carried a message from the state governor, and the signal reached three kilometers around Ciudad Universitaria from the campus instrument center. By 2001 the station had passed to the Rector's office; on 24 September 2003 its coverage expanded to metropolitan Monterrey, and in April 2004 it arrived on the city's cable systems. The analog signal went dark on 24 September 2015, and today the operation runs from the Centro de Comunicación y Producción Audiovisual, the university's combined media plant.
Monterrey's Public Screen
The channel reaches its audience on channel 53.1 over the air and on Izzi, Megacable and TotalPlay, while Radio UANL 89.7 FM - the university's radio station - broadcasts from the same facilities. The live stream carries the schedule worldwide, and the channel's digital presence extends the coverage beyond the signal. For Monterrey - the industrial capital of the north, the city of the Cerro de la Silla and the Macroplaza - Canal 53 is the public screen the university promised to be: educational, cultural and permanently on the air.
