RTV38 is a Tuscan interregional television station based in Figline e Incisa Valdarno, in the Florentine Valdarno. Founded on 15 May 1975 as Televaldarno RTV38, it was the first television broadcaster born in Tuscany and the first in the region to offer 24-hour programming. Its earliest experiments covered the Feste del Perdono of Figline Valdarno, and terrestrial broadcasting on UHF channels 38 and 26 began in 1976, gradually extending across Tuscany and central Italy.

From Euro TV and Odeon to Digital First

From 1982 to 1987 the station joined the national Euro TV circuit and later Odeon TV, gaining wide distribution before leaving Odeon on 1 January 2008. In those years it also acquired VideoFirenze, a Florentine broadcaster founded in 1977, and created its own advertising concessionaire, Studio 80 of Florence. In the early 2000s its small studio hosted Gianfranco Funari's talk programmes Virus, Extra Omnes and Funari forever, with guests such as Marco Travaglio and Antonio di Pietro. In March 2004 RTV38 became the first Tuscan television to experiment with digital terrestrial broadcasting, and in 2011 it ranked first among 56 applicants for Tuscany's DTT frequencies. In the 2011-2012 season it held the Tuscan exclusive for Michele Santoro's Servizio Pubblico, whose first episode passed 224,000 average viewers on RTV38.

TG38 and the Tuscan News Operation

The station's newsroom produces TG38, the newscast of Tuscany, aired every day at 13:00, 14:00, 19:30 and 20:30 with a late-evening edition. Daily information and current affairs complete the schedule, continuing a tradition that included the long-running live in-depth strip 19.30-25, five and a half hours of nightly journalism launched in September 2009.

Sport, Talk and Entertainment

The programme grid mixes sport and local entertainment: the daily sports talk Il salotto dello sport, the Monday-night Zona mista, and on Sunday evenings during the football season Viola Talkshow, the show dedicated to Fiorentina, flanked in the evening by Extra Viola. The schedule also includes the morning compilation Tada - Il meglio di..., the lunchtime magazine L'isola, the Saturday W Garibaldi, the afternoon show Due come noi and the humour strip Ba da boom!.
