Fox 8 WGHP Live Stream

Fox 8 WGHP is the Fox affiliate of North Carolina's Piedmont Triad - Greensboro, Winston-Salem and its home city of High Point - owned by Nexstar Media Group and broadcasting from studios on Francis Street just outside downtown High Point. On the air since 14 October 1963, it carries Fox's national programming and the largest local news operation in the Triad, and its newscasts also stream live online.

Channel 8's sign-on completed the market's network map: after fourteen years of shared and secondary affiliations across the Triad's stations, WGHP brought the region its full-time ABC outlet - and later, one of American television's more eventful affiliation stories.

Fifty-Five Hours of News a Week

FOX8 News produces more local news than any other station in the Piedmont Triad: about 55 hours each week, from a morning newscast that starts before dawn through midday, evening and late-night editions, joined on Friday through Sunday nights by a 15-minute sports show following the 10 p.m. news. The weather desk works classic Carolina territory - winter ice storms, spring tornado outbreaks and the inland tails of Atlantic hurricanes - while the sports desk covers high school playoff country and an ACC market where basketball is a civic religion. The station's "start local and stay local" identity extends to true-crime investigations, podcasts and an interactive radar that Triad viewers watch when the sky turns.

From ABC to Fox

WGHP signed on 14 October 1963 from studios inside the Sheraton Hotel on North Main Street in downtown High Point, and the ownership chain that followed was unusually busy: Gulf Broadcasting (1978), Taft (1984, the year of the Francis Street move), a reconstituted Taft and Great American, then New World Communications - which parked channel 8 in an outside trust while Fox resolved citizenship questions around its Australian-born chief. Fox programming arrived on 3 September 1995, and Fox bought the station outright in January 1996, making WGHP the first big-network owned-and-operated station in the Triad. Local TV (2008) and Tribune (2013) took their turns as owner before Nexstar completed its Tribune purchase in September 2019. When the station switched to Fox, its morning newscast - an hour-long 6 a.m. program in the early 1990s - grew into a long morning block, part of an expansion that pushed weekly news output toward forty hours and, eventually, past fifty.

The Sophia Signal

The transmitter in Sophia, North Carolina, carries channel 8 across the Triad, and the station maps to cable channel 10 throughout much of the market. A footnote of the Fox years: WGHP was the first Fox-owned station to drop the Fox Kids block, handing it to another channel in 1996 - a sign of where the station's priorities already lay, in news and the grown-up schedule that has carried it from the Sheraton Hotel to the Sophia tower ever since.
